How to improve your Blog writing.

The best way to to improve your writing?

Well, you may imagine that it is to write more and keep practicing. But according to Glen Allsopp in his course Cloud Blogging, the best way to improve your writing skills is actually by reading.

He recommends reading published books. This is because these have gone through a rigorous editorial process so that those books that do go to print, are usually very good quality. I have heard that becoming a published author with a major publishing house is one of the hardest things to achieve, because the competition is so great and the standards are so high.

In recent months the amount of book reading I was doing decreased quite a bit. I believed I had to spend more time online, researching blog posts, writing and trying to network. Other things seemed to take priority and reading fell by the wayside. But that is set to change.

As it happens, before I had started studying the Cloud Blogging course, I was thinking to myself that I should be reading more. In fact, for today’s post I had planned to write about some or the books I plan to read. I had seen that one of my favorite authors, Steven Pressfield has just released a new book: Do The Work.  That triggered me search for other books I had been meaning to buy. Isn’t it weird how we get those little synchronicities in life.

It depends on what you are reading I guess news and fiction writing wont help you much selling. As Affiliates and Blogger we should be reading more into technical and persuasive writing so reading articles that are written in those areas would help.

    Hi Roezer,

I get where your coming from and what you you say would be the logical choice. I was not thinking about writing with the aim of selling, when I wrote this post, just about making ones blog writing more readable, enjoyable and engaging.

But I think popular fiction may be a good thing to read if your aim is to sell through your writing. I’ve read that storytelling is a big part of copywriting, and I think that anything that improves the readability and power to draw people into a piece of writing is a benefit.

Frank Kern created a video about this a few years ago claiming: “popular authors are the greatest undiscovered source of marketing materials ever”. I only just remembered it when I read your comment. You can check the video out here if you are interested.

I couldn’t agree more. If you aren’t a good writer, you aren’t going to get better by writing more. It’s like being a child. Sure, practice helps, but you need to learn by watching good role models.
