Keyword Research

Ok, after a short break i have got down to building what I think is a good keyword list for SEO and site building.

This post follows on from my previous one Here.

After gathering keywords from other websites in my niche, the next step that I took was to gather more keywords using a tool called Traffic Travis. This is a free tool but there is a paid upgrade for those who want it. I just use the free one. It is useful because you can build a large list of keywords quickly and then use it to start narrowing down and filtering out unrelated and irrelevant keywords.

After using the keyword finder I got around 1600 keywords and then using the keyword sorter I reduced this to around 622. But I only want around 40 keywords for this project.

I want to find terms that are focused, buyers keywords. For example, for this niche it would be a waste of time to try and get a site ranked for the keyword “World of Warcraft”. This is because that term is too vague and is probably being used by people who want to start playing the game.

The products I am promoting are for people who are already playing the game and who are engrossed in it. An example of a good buying keyword would be “best horde leveling guide”. For a start they are already a player because they know what “horde leveling” is and it is a specific term. And, if they are looking for the “best guide”, they are likely to be considering purchasing a guide. It is similar to the word review in a search term, there is at least some buying intent there for this type of product.

The next step is to find keywords with a relatively high search volume and as low competition as possible. It can be a trade of between the three areas: search volume, competition and buyer intent. I suppose that the more experienced you are with online marketing and SEO then the better you will be at ranking highly in search engines for competitive keywords

I use a keyword tool called Market Samurai, this is a paid keyword tool which makes the process quicker and you can check how competative the keywords are for SEO purposes and can easily check what the search competition is. You can check out marketing samurai here: http://www.marketsamurai.com/ (not affiliate link)

If you prefer free methods of keyword research You can use the Google keyword tool for this part of the project. You can check the search volume of the large list of keywords you have chosen and see how competitive the term is for PPC advertisers. You can also use the free version of Wordtracker keyword tool to check for search term competitiveness

Also, you can check your keyword by just putting it in Google, hitting search and checking how many results come up. For example “horde leveling guide” has about 216,000 results for that term and about 124,000 for the exact phrase. Doing a keyword check this way can be useful for competitive keywords as it can show if there is a way onto the first page of Google with things like posting a video on Youtube, posting an article or a press release.

There may be other free tools available for keyword research but I do not know about them if you know any good ones please leave a comment.

After I have done all this I now have a keyword list of 62, it is a bit over the 40 I had aimed for but I can narrow them down or use them in other ways later on. The next step for me is to get a domain name to start building my site. This time I WILL be posting on Friday the 5th of March.

If you are serious about this type of affiliate marketing it is well worth investing in a good course on the subject. One of the best ones I have seen is Affiloblueprint by Mark Ling, I only recently got this and as it happens he is covers the same niche as me in the course. It is kind of pricey at about $197 but there are other courses and membership sites out there that cover this stuff.

Do you know any other good courses/products/coaching? If so leave a comment so others can check them out.
