Stephen Pierce on Success
Yesterday I watched an incredible video about success by Stephen Pierce. Towards the end of the video he reveals a really profound concept about the level of success that we can expect to achieve and who we are/how we see ourselves. I’ll paraphrase what he says: your results will never exceed what your own identity will allow. Our level of success is determined by the image we have of ourselves.
If we do not like the results we are getting we will often try to change our actions or take more action, but even if we get good results for a while we can often self sabotage what we are doing or after a while stop working so hard: our results suffer which will fit back into what we expect based on our identity image. You can see this happening to many people who become successful but do not feel internally that they deserve it.Celebrities who go “off the rails” and lose their popularity could be an example.
This concept about identity really woke me up and got me thinking about who we need to be to achieve high levels of success, not just what we need to do. I remember hearing the saying “do what you’ve always done and you’ll get what you’ve always got” and I wonder if could be amended slightly to: “be who you’ve always been and you’ll get what you’ve always got”.
There is a lot more wisdom and good advice in the video and you can find it here on Stephens Blog:
